Course Grades Ready! But first, the winner of the best alias award goes to It's Society's Fault.

Now, prepare yourself and using your lucky finger click here.

A solution will be posted before the end of next week, probably before Monday. Everyone have a good break!

12 December 2003, 11:33:19 CST
Final Exam Grades Ready The average is 58.1 (the two midterms were 52.9 and 49.5), the range [91,28]. To find your grade click here. The next grading update, which should include the course grades, will be posted about 16:00 today. If it's a tough call the grades will be posted later.

11 December 2003, 17:31:56 CST
Grading Update: Problem 1-4 and Problem 5(a) graded. The final exam grades should be available tomorrow before noon. Course grades may be available then but probably later. The next grading update will be posted tomorrow by noon.

11 December 2003, 12:00:22 CST
Grading Update: Problems 1-3 graded. From Problem 3 (b) it's obvious that the class has been overexposed to the WIMP (windows, icons, mouse, pull-down menus) interface. Compiler option refers to something put on the compile command line, like -O for optimization. The correct answer was -O -impl=right-version, the first option to tell it to optimize, the second tells it which implementation to optimize for. If optimization were off the compiler would not schedule and so it would not matter which implementation were used. The next grading update will be late this afternoon. The test grades should be available some time tomorrow.

10 December 2003, 16:27:56 CST
Grading Update: Problems 1 and 2 graded, and most of Problem 3 graded. I'm pleased with problem 1, many people got perfect scores. As for problem 2 please remember this: In a 2-way superscalar dynamically scheduled processor it must be possible to commit two instructions per cycle, otherwise there is not point in it being 2-way superscalar! The next grading update will be about 11:00 tomorrow. Grades may not be available until Friday.

10 December 2003, 10:52:50 CST
Grading Update: Nothing new to report. The next grading update will be at about 16:30 today.

9 December 2003, 12:40:33 CST
Linked final exam to the Homework & Exams page. Exam grading will start tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. Exam grades may be available by Wednesday evening, if not they may not be available until Friday (due to another exam). A grading update will be posted tomorrow at about 11:00.

8 December 2003, 9:23:48 CST
FAQ: “Will there be reservation station questions on the final exam?”
Ans: No, you are only responsible for dynamic scheduling using method 3. (Reservation stations are used in methods 1 and 2.)

Midterm Exam Grades Ready  Brace yourselves, the average and standard deviation are close to those of the first exam. The grade range is in [19,100]. Only a few were helped by the exam, for some others the first midterm won't seem so bad anymore. To find your category click here.

20 November 2003, 12:36:54 CST
Grading Update: Problem 1 graded, problem 2 started. Grades should be available later today. The next grading update will be posted by about 16:30.

19 November 2003, 16:26:55 CST
Grading Update: Problem one nearly graded. Average seems to be in 30s, hardly a disaster. A few realized that the load loaded the first instruction itself and from that one could determine the register numbers. (The rd register could also be determined from a dst pipeline latch field.) The next grading update will be at about 11:00 (that's 11:00, not 23:00) tomorrow.

19 November 2003, 11:52:50 CST
Linked Midterm Two to the Homework & Exams page. A grading update will be posted about 16:30 today. Grades may be available by Friday, definitely by Monday.

My apologies for those who don't need it, but here is another hint for Homework 3, Problem 3(a): Think of all the instructions that would use the path from MEM to the PC and also look at the stuff between the PC and the Mem Port.

Grading Update: Midterm Exam grades ready!! The average is 46.7, grades range from 15 to 84. Steady yourself and click here.

23 October 2003, 15:51:24 CDT
Grading Update: problems 1 and 2 graded. It's a good thing I'm joking when I say that using a div instruction to divide by a power of 2 will result in automatic failure! It did cost 3 points on the exam. The next grading update will be posted about 20:00.

23 October 2003, 10:57:54 CDT
Grading Update: problem 1 is still being graded. The next grading update will be posted by about 16:00.

22 October 2003, 14:48:57 CDT
Linked midterm exam to the Homework & Exams pages. It seems Problem 1 was harder than I thought. I'm sure given enough time everyone would solve it, here's a preliminary solution.
Grades should be available by tomorrow evening, a grading update will be posted tomorrow by about 11:00.
In the mean time if you need some light reading and you've been noticing that professors have been paying more attention to their looks lately, read this.

Some students have gotten a blank page when following a link to PDF material (such as Homework 1). I've encountered the same problem under two circumstances. When the reader is first run after being installed it will try to pop up an EULA (end user license agreement). It seems that sometimes it can't when started from a browser, and so nothing shows. Try starting reader from the "Start" menu, and after reading the EULA, consulting with your personal attorney, and giving the matter careful consideration, click "I agree." The other case occurred when installing Acrobat Reader 6 and then uninstalling Acrobat 5, leaving the PDF mime type without an application. If you did something like that try re-installing Acrobat Reader. If you are still encountering problems, let me know which link you tried to follow and what time you tried to follow it. Also let me know which operating system and browser you were using.
