There was a mistake in the solution to Homework 2 Problem 1: The solution gave values of CPI, but they were referred to as IPC. This affected parts (a) and (b). The solution has been corrected. Note that this does not change the clock frequency computed in part (b).

The conditions for the final exam are the same as the midterm: closed-book, but you can use both sides of a 216 * 280 mm note sheet. The note sheet can have anything on it and you can keep it after the exam (or sell it, or throw it out, etc.)

First, important business. The solution to last year's final will be posted on Saturday.

In class a student reasonably wondered if it was impossible to perfectly predict any period-n local history patterns with less than an n-1-outcome local history. The answer is no, here is an example: nnnTTTnnnTNT (both lower-case and upper-case en are not-taken outcomes, lower case is used to help readability). The period is 12, but 5 bits of local history suffice (for example, nnnTT).

For a more extreme case imagine an ordinary 8-bit counter, one that returns to zero after 255. Construct a sequence of branch outcomes by taking the binary representation of the counter values, each counter value provides eight outcomes. The period is 256 * 8 = 2048, but it should be obvious that a much smaller local history should suffice.
