Dr. Owen T. Tan

Retired from LSU in December 1994. In late November 1966, he joined the faculty of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, first as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering, then as Associate and Full Professor in 1972 and 1978 respectively. During his sabbatical leaves from LSU he was a Visiting Professor with the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Technology in Eindhoven (1977) and Delft (1991), the Netherlands.

As coordinator of the power area at LSU, Dr. Tan established new power courses and continually revised existing ones. His research was in modeling and control of power systems and electric machines, parameter estimation, power system harmonics and the application of neural-net based expert systems in power systems. He published over 40 journal and over 20 conference papers on the results of research projects that were sponsored by power utility companies, the Electric Power Research Institute and the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory at Wright-Patterson. He also served as regular reviewer for several IEEE Transactions.

Dr. Tan received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands in 1961. Before entering a university career, he had six years of industrial experience in R & D with the electrical industries "Willem Smit & Co." in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and "Siemens Schuckert Co." in Erlangen, Germany where he was involved in the design and control of electric drives and special electric machines.
